Seminar about job opportunities at ARPA-E to be held on Tuesday

Dr. Joseph Rollin, a fellow at ARPA-E, will give a seminar about job opporunities at ARPA-E on Tuesday, April 12, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in 102 Chemsistry Building. Whether you are about to graduate or still have a few years left, this is a great opportunity for graduate students to see the types of careers that are available to those with advanced degrees. Dr. Rollin will highlight ARPA-E’s fellowship program, as well as positions as “Technology-to-Market Advisors”, “Technology-to-Market Scholars”, and “Program Directors.”

More information about the job opportunities that Dr. Rollin will be discussing can be found here.

Fifth faculty candidate seminar announced

The ChE department announced a fifth faculty candidate seminar. Dr. Daniel Betran-Villegas, currently a post-doc at the University of Michigan, will present on Thursday, March 17, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm in 102 Chemistry Building. His seminar is entitled “Dynamic modeling of colloidal assembly”.

The abstract for Dr. Betran-Villegas’s seminar and a brief biography can be found here.

A brief recap of the graduate-student-selected seminar by Dr. Scott Fogler

Dr. Scott Fogler, a professor at the University of Michigan who wrote the textbook “Elements of Chemical Reactions Engineering” that is nearly ubiquitous in chemical engineering curricula around the world, was the third ChE GSA selected seminar speaker last Thursday.

Dr. Fogler’s seminar was entitled “How to Get from Here to There and What Happens Along the Way”. The seminar covered a wide variety of topics, including how his teaching career got started (or, more accurately, how it almost did not get started), how Penn State has influenced his career, how his current work on asphaltene deposition was influenced by one of his former graduate students as well as our current department head, Dr. Phil Savage, and how Kepner-Tregoe’s troubleshooting algorithm can be used to solve problems effectively. The seminar had many memorable anecdotes and life lessons weaved into Dr. Fogler’s interesting career path. At the end of the seminar, the ChE GSA presented Dr. Fogler with gift, which can be seen in the photo gallery below.

The ChE GSA thanks Dr. Fogler for coming to Penn State as our 2016 graduate-student-selected seminar speaker.

Abstract released for Scott Fogler’s seminar

The abstract for Dr. Scott Fogler’s March 3rd seminar was recently released and can be seen in its entirety below. Dr. Fogler is the third ChE GSA selected seminar speaker. He will present his seminar on Thursday, March 3, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in 102 Chemistry Building.

“How to Get from Here to There and What Happens Along the Way”

Yogi Berra of the New York Yankees once said “If you don’t know where you’re going, you will probably wind up some place else,” and sometimes that works out just fine. In research, teaching and the workplace we always have to look for the unexpected and then go with the flow when it happens. I will discuss how Steve Covey’s book on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People can be relevant to our careers, and how Penn State has been influential in my teaching and textbooks. The seminar will end with a discussion of Kepner-Tregoe’s troubleshooting algorithm that has proven to be extremely useful in problem solving, consulting, and research.

More information about Dr. Fogler and the seminar can be found here.

Time set for graduate student meeting with Scott Fogler

ChE graduate students will have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Scott Fogler before he gives his seminar on Thursday, March 3. The meeting will be held in 101 Fenske Laboratory from 10:30 am to 11:15 am. Dr. Fogler’s seminar will follow from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in 102 Chemistry Building. The meeting is an opportunity for graduate students to converse with Dr. Fogler about his research and experiences.

Information about Dr. Fogler can be found on his group’s website.
